A horse float floor is not merely a flat deck. It is a dynamic, load-bearing diaphragm subjected to torsional twist on corrugated country tracks, sudden braking inertia, and intense point-loading from iron shoes. Standard commercial plywood or untreated softwoods have no place in this environment.
When replacing a degraded floor, we strip out deteriorated timber back to the bare chassis, wire-wheel and treat surface oxidation along the steel bearer flanges, and install high-density Australian hardwood tongue-and-groove planks or structural F17-grade marine-bonded hardwood ply. Every individual plank edge is sealed prior to installation with hydrophobic timber preservative. We fasten down using heavy-gauge countersunk stainless or zinc-plated structural fixings that do not loosen under road vibration, before re-laying and hermetically perimeter-sealing non-slip vulcanised rubber.

A hesitant horse often senses a flexed or hollow ramp before the handler notices any physical defect. Tailgate ramps endure continuous ground strike, rainfall during transit, and the pivoting downward shear of hooves stepping onto the incline. Soft rot around the ramp framing or delaminated plywood beneath timber cleats creates subtle springiness that shakes an equine’s confidence.
Our mobile replacement service reconstructs ramps from the framework up. We plane and fit structural hardwood ramp boards, replace split or missing timber anti-slip cleats with bevelled Australian tallowwood or spotted gum battens, reset heavy-duty piano and leaf hinges, and ensure counter-balance springs or gas struts seat true. The finished ramp closes square, locks tight, and delivers a dead-solid feel underfoot the moment your horse steps on.
